Steve Krier Blog

Welcome to my blog section!  Periodically I'll write my thoughts on certain subjects and post them here for you all to read.  At the end of each post I'll have an area that will allow you to respond (good or bad) to what I've written.  I'd love to hear your opinions and would really appreciate the feedback. As always thank you for visiting my site and learning about the world of hunting.

It has started....yeah

Outfitters I work with have decided that they can harvest more animals of trophy quality if they are able to open up the camps earlier.  This does two things that benefit the outfitters and the hunters.  The Outfitters are able to make up any lost income from fewer hunters coming during the peak season.  The hunters get to hunt animals that are still in their summer patterns.  These animals haven't yet started the rutting activity so that they are still sporting their full growth of antler but show no signs of wear and tear.  Days are longer too giving more opportunity to see them in their early and late day forages for food.  If there is a down side it is the fact that these animals are not drawn together from all of the little holes that are home this time of year.  You don't have the benefit  of cows drawing them in for gathering herds of cows especially with the elk and moose herds.  It is very likely that there will be herds of bulls together.

Gary and Ron were two such hunters that took advantage of the last two weeks in August to hunt elk, moose and caribou in northern British Columbia.  Their trip allowed them almost two weeks to find trophy game.  I just spoke with them via cell phone on their way home and there is two good moose and a 6x6 elk in the back of their truck.  Other bull elk were seen but this is a trophy hunt and a monster bull was seen several days but not taken.  The elk have started bugling and they wish they had another week but that is for the next group of hunters.  The guides know where this bull has been living and they will be on the look out for him and the others that always just seem to appear.

Early season hunts are usually less expensive and success rates are excellent.  If this is something you would be interested in doing it still leaves your September and October and November for other game.  The meat is excellent since the rut hasn't started up yet so bring lots of cooler storage for deboned game.

Contact me at any time if this is the type of trip you would be interested in pursuing.

Good hunting,

God Bless

Steve
